The Post-Anthropocene era is represented through the use of VR in Micro Derive, which examines the relationship between humans and non-human entities.
The project fuses ideas based on Donna Haraway’s concepts like Compostism and Microbiocene, investigating how life on Earth is sustained by interconnected more-than-human entanglements and whether it is possible for human beings to live with other non-human entities using virtual reality.
This perspective resonates with the framework of new materialism, which critiques anthropocentric views by highlighting the active agency of non-human entities and the interconnectedness of all forms of life.
In Micro Derive, users have the opportunity to immerse themselves in virtual environments where human and microorganism combinations can be explored. By becoming part of these digital ecosystems, we gain deeper insights into our future and our place in it, while recognising the vital role of non-human actors in shaping our shared world. This project encourages a shift away from human exceptionalism, promoting a
broader perspective
of existence in the Anthropocene and beyond.
